The constitution of Kenya contains several provisions that aim at protecting women by addressing challenges that seem to have been normalized. One of the provisions is two-thirds gender rule which states that not more than two-thirds of the members of elective or appointive bodies shall be of the same gender. The Constitution recognizes the contribution of spouses to the acquisition of property during marriage by introducing Matrimonial property rights. The constitution also promotes gender equality by eliminating harmful cultural practices like female genital mutilation. For women in violent marriages, the constitution protects them against domestic violence.
