Environmental regulations are rules set out to protect the environment from harmful activities carried out by individuals in their daily activities such as businesses. In Kenya, there is a very comprehensive legal framework for environmental protection that provides the legal basis for environmental management and conservation in the country. This legal framework establishes the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) which is responsible for regulating and supervising all matters in relation to the environment. In order to comply with these regulations, the businesses and individuals should:

i) Familiarize themselves with the relevant laws.
This can be conducted through education and awareness campaigns. When people understand the importance of these regulations, they are more likely to comply voluntarily. The campaigns should focus on educating the society on the beauty and impacts that comes with these regulations of preserving the environment as well as the disadvantages of non- compliance.

ii) Ensure continued enforcement of the laws.
Continued enforcement should be done repeatedly to keep the society on toes with the environmental regulations. The advantage that comes with continued enforcement is that the compliance will always meet the needs of the environment.

iii) Manage waste
This can be achieved by identifying and managing the key environmental risks from your business activities such as air pollution, waste, water contamination and noise. Waste can also be managed through reusing and recycling.

iv) Obtaining the necessary permits.
This will enable you to discharge any trade effluent to the sewers or emit any pollutants into the air.

v) Employ professional assistance.
This can be made possible by seeking guidance from professionals such as lawyers or people who have specialised in environmental studies.
